P-61 Blackwidow picture
Over 3,700 P-51 Mustangs were produced during the war years. The P-51 was prototyped in October of 1940. The Mustang was built as a high speed fighter and was used early on as an escort plane for bombing raids in Europe. It also saw action in North Africa and against the V-1 rocket in Britain. Near the end of the war, the Mustang was used as a fighter escort to B-29 in raids against the Japanese main land.
Over 3,300 P-63 Kingcobras were built by the Bell corporation. Over 2,400 of these planes were shipped to the Soviet Union under the lend – lease program. These planes served the Soviet Air Force in attacking ground forces of the Germans. Another 300 were send to the Free French Air Force.
